The much maligned term "conscious uncoupling," made famous via the flimflam of Hollywood gossip, got me thinking the other day about the much less glamorous issue of an identity crisis that many cross cultural explorers experience venturing into new territories of new careers, countries or social strata.
Just like Gwyneth Paltrow claimed to outgrow her relationship, trans-cultural individuals have to at times divorce their new selves from the identities to which they felt committed in the past. And just like in any relationship, the most common causes of conflict between the old and new elements of one's identity are work/money, infidelity and diverging goals. |
